CariVu: Love at First Sight

Posted by Team DEXIS

Eileen_1A while back, I had just been to the dentist and was feeling pretty proud of my cavity-free mouth, when I received an e-mail from DEXIS inviting me to learn about and train on their new caries detection device, CariVu™. Don't tell anyone at DEXIS, but I groaned inside. I've been in dentistry for 20 years and have seen and evaluated a lot of caries detection devices. A few were good, but more were not that impressive. All the caries detection devices that I had used gave information that was highly subjective and sometimes difficult to interpret. However, I knew that DEXIS doesn’t put its name on anything but the best, so I decided to participate.

Lucky you, Dr. Yu!

Sometimes when “Lady Luck” smiles on a person, exciting and unexpected things happen. It may even turn out to be a transilluminating experience! This was the case, when Dr. Holman Yu’s office manager, who is also his wife, Inez Luk, was searching the DEXIS website. She recalls, “I was looking for the phone number for tech support and stumbled upon the contest. I saw the promo video and thought CariVu™ was an interesting caries detection device. I could see the benefits of having one. So I entered for a chance to win.”

DEXIS helps with “quick and decisive action”

Zhne_neu_3When planning a trip to the U.S., tourists prepare for fun and adventure. However, a different type of trip that a German tourist recently took on Lombard Street in San Francisco was a very unwelcome surprise.  After she fell, her husband saw that her bridge had fallen out, and her face was bloody. He thought fast and Googled “dentist” on his iPad. Dr. Cynthia K. Brattesani’s name came up on the search as very close to them.

Dr. Brattesani and her team were just about to start their lunch hour when, as she describes, “a tourist entered our office holding some teeth in her hands

Pictures and images worth a thousand words

DEXcam_Asst-PatientInventor and icon of success, Walt Disney, once said, “Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language.” His quote on the value of imaging in reaching people and communicating ideas is definitely not just a Mickey Mouse theory. Whereas dentists are trained to read and interpret X-rays, sometimes patients appreciate seeing images in a more familiar way.  DEXcam™ intra-oral cameras can support radiographic findings and show patients chips, cracks, leaking restorations, calculus, periodontal abnormalities and other disease symptoms in a format that they understand and can see clearly.

Hygienist_wSensor_and_Patient_FBFor teens, it always seems too soon to ask for those driving lessons, and in retirement years, some may feel it is too late for those skydiving sessions. But, in a dental practice, it is never too early or too late to get a DEXIS™ digital imaging system.

Thank you DEXIS

The winter holidays bring with them both happiness and reflection — it’s a time of looking back on memories and looking forward to hope. That’s why this story, my story means so much to me. As Manager, Public and Media Relations for DEXIS, I have many reasons to be thankful. I am grateful to be an integral part of a company with a conscience. DEXIS gives back to the community through donations of equipment and time, through worthy causes such as Give Kids a Smile, Mission of Mercy, and TeamSmile, just to name a few. Attending these events has allowed me to meet the dentists and associates who use our products every day, and share their skills with people whose finances often preclude vital dental care for them and their children.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) posted these interesting facts on caries1:

Although dental caries (tooth decay) is largely preventable, it remains the most common chronic disease of children aged 6 to 11 years (25%), and adolescents aged 12 to 19 years (59%). Tooth decay is four times more common than asthma among adolescents aged 14 to 17 years (15%).

Many adults also have untreated tooth decay (e.g., 28% of those 35 to 44 years and 18% of those 65 and older).

While DEXIS participates in many outreach events over the year, this one, held in New Mexico—the Land of Enchantment, enchanted patients and doctors alike, with improved access to digital imaging throughout the venue. The added efficiencies made caring for patients in need easier and quicker.

Milk and Cookies

Synergy is defined as two or more things functioning together to produce a result that is greater than the sum of the individual elements. Like the iconic pairings of milk and cookies, movies and popcorn, computers and the Internet, we also have experienced the combining of two great things that fit so well together that we ended up with something that’s even more incredible.
